I’m in Stockholm,Sweden, recording the next Michael Monroe album,a follow up to the critically acclaimed previous album Sensory Overdrive(Universal Music) .
I flew over to Sweden from my hometown of NYC as the Hurricane Sandy ravaged city started on the massive clean up. Jetlagged, I arrived at the recording studio to find out its the same bloody studio(Park Studios) where we recorded the first Hanoi Rocks album(Bangkok Shocks Saigon Shakes Hanoi Rocks) in 1981.The sight and the vibe took me for a head spinning walk on the memory lane, all sorts of fond hallucinatory memories popped up in the back recesses of my brain. The whole band crowding into a Volvo in the studio parking lot in -15 Centigrade dark Sweden winter to listen to the mixes and argue about the instrument levels, the sound engineer, who in everyones opinion was way too friendly with his pet dog Bamse….
As I write this we have 14 backing tracks done in 4 days w a producer that we cant name yet…….
Gotta say this man with no name is brilliant and we are in very capable hands. We are looking at an April 2013 release followed by a looooong world tour.
On the Mad Juana front, we just finished recording new demos in NYC before, during and after the hurricane. Very excited about how the songs are forming, look for a 2013-14 release. The Mad Juana musical excess train is reaching new heights with the new band members and inspired song writing.
Go to www.michaelmonroe.com for the last Monroe tour dates of the year and go to www.facebook.com/madjuana to keep up with our stuff.
Demos in the bag, the last spurt of summer festivals, Keitele, Oulu, Valkeakoski coming up starting tomorrow. After that some sweet time in my own bed in NYC, haven’t seen it in almost 2 months, will my dog still recognize me? Is my favorite restaurant Chez Oscar still there? Is my bicycle still there or has it been stolen like the last one? The tram nr 6 is changing into Q train, instead of 16 degree days its going to be 30 celsius, i think i’m ready, hell yes, been one helluva summer again w The Monroes but yes I’m ready to go home and squeeze my mama, hang w Quest and walk Elvi, thanks everyone for a great summer. LUV
We are on our way to JFK airport to catch a flight to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Playing a show tomorrow and another one on friday in Sao Paolo, Brasil on friday. Looking forward to this quick trip very much, hopefully first of the many South-American tours.
Last week Sami joined former Heartbreakers man Walter Lure at Bowery Electric in NYC to celebrate 30 years of The Waldos. Here’s some footage of Pirate Love and I Wanna Be Loved (as well as some priceless banter from Walter)!
Last year I was contacted by Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations tv program production team thru a mutual friend. The producers wanted to pick my brains about Finland’s eating, drinking and cultural habits. I let them pick ….
To make a quite a long story short. I somehow ended up in front of the camera for a week of culinary, libatious and cultural mayhem in the frosty north.
Tony turned out to be a sort of a long lost brother. We clicked immediately about our favorite bands…Iggy and the Stooges, New York Dolls, Dead Boys, Rolling Stones ……
We also both happen to enjoy a little bit of a tipple here and there and obviously share a mutual love of food.
I had a chance to show him the Finland that I know and love. Took him to a bar tram, a gypsy restaurant, folk car racing, sauna, cupping and some great and not-so-great foods of my motherland.
The experience left us both with big smiles on our faces and a two-day hangover.
Tune in and check it out on Monday May 14th , on The Travel Channel,9pm Eastern NYC Time
